An air form is like a balloon fabricated in the shape of the structure. The balloon is fixed down to the slab and inflated. Once inflated, there are two ways that we can fabricate the dome shell.
One method is from the inside of the balloon (air form). The inside of the air form is accessed through an air-lock, and all the materials are sprayed up against the inside of the air form.
The other method is to spray the materials on the outside of the balloon, which is our more common method.
When the air form is fixed around the perimeter of the dome slab and inflated, it forms a rigid surface on which to apply render or shot-crete.
When an air form is well maintained and cared for, it can be reused many times; that means savings can be made by distributing the air form cost over multiple projects.
