Questions About Building Codes for Domes
Domeshells Designs to Australian Building Code Standards
The Australian Building Code is one of the toughest in the world and building codes for domes are the same as any other structure..
We have built domes in many different ways in our pursuit of the most simple and economical methods to build dome houses. We have a patented system that requires no steel (too expensive) and we have other systems including the one we use today that can utilize bamboo (for countries that permit it). In Australia, Domeshells has developed a basalt reinforcing system that meets Australian Building Code requirements and allows for the most cost-effective dome-building system.
We design engineer and certify every dome design.
Councils around Australia are required to comply with the building code of Australia and Domeshells provides engineering certifications for all of its designs to meet that requirement.
We have never been refused a building permit. Town planning regulations, in most cases, can not dictate architectural style.
Exempt Development
For backyard cabins under 10m2. The Building Code of Australia provides for certain structures which fall under what is called the “exempt development provisions”. Simply put, this means that each council can specify in their local rules what constitutes “exempt development”. Under the council’s “exempt development” provisions you are often allowed to build a “shed” without applying for approvals for a structure under 10m2 and under 2.4m high – check with your local council.
