More About Basalt Fibre and it's Benefits

Why use basalt concrete reinforcing materials

  • handling characteristic is easier than steel
  • quarter the weight of steel
  • speeds construction time
  • twice the tensile strength of steel (use one bar size smaller than steel)
  • does not rust or corrode (suitable for marine and corrosive environments)
  • easy to cut (with bolt cutters of a cut-off wheel)
  • does not conduct electricity
  • same thermal coefficient as concrete
  • it’s a sustainable cost-effective long term solution

What is Basalt Fibre

Basalt fibre is made from a single material, crushed basalt. Basalt of high acidity (over 46% silica content) and low iron content is considered desirable for fibre production. Unlike with other composites, such as glass fibre, no other materials are added during its production. The basalt is simply washed and then melted.

The technology of production of BCF (Basalt Continuous Fibre) is a one-stage process: melting, of basalt and extraction of fibres. Basalt is heated only once. Additional processing of BCF into various materials is carried out using “cold technologies” with low energy costs.

The manufacture of basalt fibre requires the melting of the crushed and washed basalt rock at about 1,500 °C . The molten rock is then extruded through small nozzles to produce continuous filaments of basalt fibre.

They also have a high elastic modulus, resulting in high specific strength—three times that of steel. Thin fibre is usually used for textile applications mainly for the production of woven fabric. Thicker fibre is used in filament winding, for example, for production of CNG cylinders or pipes. The thickest fibre is used for pultrusion, geogrid, unidirectional fabric, multi-axial fabric production and in form of chopped strand for concrete reinforcement.

One of the fastest growing applications for continuous basalt fibre at the moment is the production of basalt rebar that is a substitute for traditional steel rebar for concrete reinforcement.

Basalt Fibre Safety

The basalt fibres typically have a filament diameter of between 10 and 20 µm which is far enough above the respiratory limit of 5 µm to make basalt fibre a suitable replacement for asbestos.

Basalt Fibre Reinforcing Products

At Domeshells, we offer a range of basalt fibre reinforcing products, including:

  • Basalt fibre meshes – 5mm mesh to 50mm mesh
  • Chopped basalt fibre – 5mm to 50mm
  • Basalt fibre rebar – 4mm to 25mm deformed bar
  • Angles and ligatures – of any configuration are manufactured at the source

Our products are made from high-quality basalt fibre, twice the tensile strength of steel, which is known for its exceptional strength and durability. Basalt fibre is also resistant to corrosion, making it an ideal choice for use in concrete reinforcement.

Compared to traditional steel reinforcement, basalt fibre offers several advantages, including:

  • Higher tensile strength
  • Lower weight
  • Greater resistance to corrosion
  • Improved durability

Applications of Basalt Fibre Reinforcing Products

Basalt fibre reinforcing products can be used in a wide range of concrete shell structures, including:

  • Domes
  • Arches
  • Barrel vaults
  • Free-form structures
  • Swimming pools
  • Bridges and tunnels
  • Marine and corrosive environments

Using basalt fibre reinforcement in these applications can help to improve the strength and durability of the structures, while also reducing the need for maintenance over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is basalt fibre?

Basalt fibre is a type of fibre made from volcanic rock. It is the most common rock in the world and is used for road paving. The fibre, produced from extruding molten basalt rock at about 1500 degrees C is known for its exceptional strength and durability, making it an ideal choice for use in concrete reinforcement. How is basalt fibre used in concrete reinforcement?

Basalt fibre can be used in a variety of forms, including meshes, rebar and chopped fibre that is added to the concrete mix to improve its strength and durability. It can be sprayed by shotcrete.

What are the benefits of using basalt fibre over steel reinforcement?

Basalt fibre offers several advantages over traditional steel reinforcement, including higher tensile strength, lower weight, greater corrosion resistance, and improved durability.

How does the cost of basalt fibre reinforcement compare to steel reinforcement?

The cost of basalt fibre reinforcement is generally more expensive than steel however, there are savings due to its light weight and ease and speed of use on the site. It is especially suitable for curved or compound curved structures like domes. In addition, the long-term benefits of using basalt fibre, such as improved durability and reduced maintenance costs, can make it a more cost-effective choice over time.

Is basalt fibre reinforcement easy to install?

Basalt fibre reinforcement is easier to install and can be installed using standard concrete construction techniques.
