Bamboo Dome Building Workshop Byron Bay – 28 Nov to 9 Dec
In this workshop we will build a 5.0m diameter dome using a combination of split bamboo, wire mesh and render to construct a ferro/cement thin shell structure that can be used of any kind of accommodation.
Have You Ever Had the Urge to Want to Build Your Own Structure?
Thin monolithic ferro cement shell structures make incredibly strong buildings capable of extreme conditions including cyclones and earthquakes. They are warm in winter and cool in summer, termite proof, bug proof with high fire capability. They are commonly constructed for storm shelters and are a favourite for underground or survival shelters. In fact they can be used for anything.
Dome Spaces Feel Natural and Comfortable to Human Beings
Domes have amazing acoustics, no phase cancellation, no standing waves. a pure sound. Energy flows evenly around the room.
What We Cover in This Workshop
You will gain valuable hands-on experience and know-how about using the simple bamboo/mesh/render system to build small or large ferro/cement thin shell structures of almost any shape you can imagine.
Topics we Will Cover
- Slab design and setup
- Slab and footings reinforcement types and placement
- Critical design elements
- Shell structure engineering basic theory
- Bamboo – types to use, cutting, handling, treating and splitting the bamboo
- Using the split bamboo to form the shape of the structure and critical elements
- Attaching the mesh to the bamboo frame
- How to allow for door, window and other openings
- Allowing for electrical wiring
- Render mix design
- Mixing render
- Applying render by hand and spray machine (we will be mostly using a small, efficient render spray machine)
- Building up the render thickness
- Finishing the render
- Use of fibres and crushed aerated materials in render and their properties
